How Hard Is It to Get Into The USNA? A Look into the Naval Academy Acceptance Rate
Naval Academy Admissions are extremely selective with an acceptance rate of 8%!
Since it determines the future of the United States Navy and Marine Corps, candidates must meet specific standards, including but not limited to:
- Academic excellence: A GPA around or higher than a 3.7 on a 4.0 scale, ACT of 26-32, or an SAT score of 1200-1420.
- Physical fitness. This is further verified with a medical exam.
- A nomination from a member of the US Senate or House of Representatives, the president or vice-president of the United States, the ROTC/JROTC Unit, a Navy/Marine commander, and other qualified sources.
But that still doesn’t guarantee admission.
You’ll also need to complete a rigorous interview process in your home state with a Blue and Gold Officer, show “demonstrated interest,” and be prepared to talk about why you want to join the institution and become a naval officer, among other things.
Naval Academy Midshipman Death: Gone Too Soon
Twenty-one-year-old Luke Gabriel Bird of Texas, a midshipman 2nd class at the Naval Academy, passed away in Chile during a study abroad program. It seemed that he lost his footing while on a hike with a Chilean Naval Academy student. His body was found in a nearby lagoon close to the Salto El Agua waterfall. According to officials, no foul play is suspected.
The “unfathomably smart” engineering major and intramural sports athlete marks the second death in two months in 2022.
Before him, Tyler Connors from Utah died in Philadelphia while on leave. The 24-year-old entered the USNA with a Secretary of the Navy nomination and passed away from complications related to thermal injuries. His death was ruled a suicide.
